Target Market: Define Your Audience Before Blowing Marketing Dollars

Feb 19, 2020

Last week, I met with three separate clients. Excited about starting new businesses, they wanted professionally written LinkedIn bios, blog posts, and website copy. Great! Then I asked,

Two clients looked confused, and the other answered softly, "mmm...everyone."

As a fresh start-up or even an established business, identifying your target audience is the key to marketing. When you promote to everyone, your message is weak and you'll attract looky-loos, not buyers. This will result in a low return for your marketing dollars, and you don't want that.

Instead, research the demographics and characteristics of your audience. Create a comprehensive buyer's profile. Check the library for data. Discover who your competitors are targetting. Conduct surveys or talk directly with your intended audience. Ask what frustrates them; what keeps them up at night; and what would make their life easier?

Stepping into the shoes of your target audience is the springboard to create a powerful and focused marketing message.

The more you know about your audience, the better I'll be able to target them with valuable content that speaks their language and positions you as a leading authority with solutions to their problems. A targetted message increases conversion rates and is a better return on your investment dollars.

Starting your new business is a challenging and exciting job. Creating the right message that connects with your audience is my job.
